MakingMaterials Lab

  • subjectSkills

MakingMaterials Lab is a multidisciplinary group that deals with the design of materials and surfaces, paying attention to innovative and functional materials, nanotechnologies and functional surface treatments, oriented towards applications in the manufacturing, packaging, and textile sectors.

The skills range from materials’ selection criteria, research and development of fibre-reinforced composites, CMF design (Colours, Materials, Finishes), perceptual-behavioural analysis of users, and system-thinking for product packaging innovation, but also to the design and cutting of corrugated cardboard products.

The group has collaborated with companies such as Faber S.p.A., Luxottica, Ghelfi Ondulati, Conai, Comieco, and Brevetti Montolit.

Collaborations are active with universities such as: Imperial College London (UK), Groupe des Écoles Centrales (France), École de Mines (France), IIT - Institute of Design (USA), Loughborough Design School (UK), USP - FAU (Brazil).

The multidisciplinarity of the group allows the investigation of different research areas, linked on one hand to materials engineering and on the other one to design.

The main areas of interest include:

    • Materials’ selection criteria
    • Research and development of fibre-reinforced composites
    • Additive manufacturing
    • Nanotechnologies, functional materials, and functionalization
    • Materials and sustainability
    • Packaging and smart / active packaging
    • Colours, Materials, and Finishes (CMF)
    • Product-system innovation
