Guido Raos obtained a degree in chemistry from the University of Milano in 1989, and a Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry from the University of Bristol in 1993. He has been at the Politecnico since then, becoming full professor in 2018. He teaches general chemistry to first-year engineering students, and molecular modeling of materials to master students.
Research activities are based on the use of theoretical and computational tools to elucidate the properties of materials, especially the soft ones: polymers, gels, nanocomposites, organic semiconductors, ionic liquids. These materials are important for many engineering applications (e.g., adhesion and friction, or energy conversion and storage), but they are often complicated and sometimes even ill-defined at the molecular level. The general approach is to try to identify the essential elements of a problem and incorporate them in a model that can be analyzed theoretically or simulated on a computer, in order to generate broad insights, interpret specific experiments or suggest new ones.
