Students of the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Guglielmo Marconi (Dalmine), hosted by the EYEducation Laboratory created by the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "Giulio Natta", had the opportunity to immerse themselves in virtual reality with EYESIM to explore and learn how to operate the section of refinery plant: a crude distillation column.

The initiative was organized by prof. Maurizio Masi, in collaboration with the Principal (prof. Maurizio Adamo Chiappa) and prof. Pietro Capelli, and was held under the supervision of SuPER TEAM (Sustainable Process Engineering Research Team).

The students had the opportunity to learn more about the parameters of the operating of a distillation column, to read a PFD (Process Flow Diagram) and a PID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram). EYESIM allows to simulate real system dynamics, and permit to a technical operator to work in close contact with the DCS (Distributed Control System) and, observing the trend of the system variables, to be directed in actions "in the field" .

The project allowed students to understand "first-hand" the trasformation of a petrochemical plant from a two-dimensional concept (technical drawings and documents) to a real plant.

The lab provides visors and other virtual reality devices that allow the user to operate and interact within realistic and immersive virtual environments developed with the collaboration of automation and software development companies, which can represent laboratories, pilot plants or even large-scale manufacturing or power generation facilities.
