Olfactometric Laboratory

  • subjectSkills

The Olfactometric Laboratory of Politecnico di Milano University represents a reference point for the analysis and the assessment of the environmental odour impact, linking the academic perspective and industrial sector.

The innovation of research techniques, monitoring, analysis and estimation of atmospheric dispersion allowed the Laboratory to become a national reference for industries, inspection bodies and European researchers, through participation in projects financed by the Horizon program 2020.

    The Laboratory deals with:

    • Collection and analysis of odour samples by dynamic olfactometry
    • Assessment of the environmental odour impact
    • Continuous monitoring of odours with electronic noses
    • Chemical analysis of odour emissions

Given the experience gained in the odour analysis, in conjunction with environmental and industrial research, we apply our knowledge in other sectors of great scientific interest, such as medical-diagnostic and quality control in product development.

  • subjectResearch activities
    • Odour impact assessments
    • Characterization of complex odour sources (e.g. hydrocarbon floating roof tanks)
    • Quantification of fugitive and diffuse emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
    • Continuous odour monitoring and real time odour impact assessment
    • Measurement of new EROMs (European Reference Odour Mass)
    • Development of air sampling systems
    • Toxicological impact of industrial odour emissions
    • Development of innovative methods for sub-hourly fluctuation modelling
    • Optimization and definition of minimum quality criteria for sense-instrumental analysis (e.g. electronic noses)
    • Innovative diagnostics through sense-instrumental tools
    • Development of innovative odour analysis methods for process control
    • Quality control with sensorial and sense-instrumental techniques
