Giancarlo Pennati was born in Milan in 1964. He received his master degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 1989 and his PhD in Bioengineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 1995.
Associate Professor in Industrial Bioengineering at the Politecnico di Milano (Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta”) where he is lecturer of the courses of “Biomechanical Design” for the students of Biomedical Engineering and of “Experimental Biomechanics” for PhD students.
His reaserch activity is carried out at the Laboratory of Biologial Structures Mechanics (LaBS), of which is the Director, and is developed through scientific collaborations with several Italian and international centres. The main topics of his research are the design of medical devices and prostheses, biomechanics of the cardiovascular system and surgical corrections, mechanical properties and fatigue behaviour of biological tissues and biomaterials.
He has been involved in funded researches from the European Commission, the Foundation Leducq and a number of public and private Italian National programs. Currently, he is the local coordinator of a RIA project in H2020 (InSilc) and he is participating in other two EU projects.
He is Section Editor of the Journal of Applied Biomaterials & Functional Materials (JAB-FM) and member of the Review Editorial Board of Frontiers in Pediatric Cardiology. Moreover, he is a member of European Society of Biomechanics (ESB).
He is reviewer for many scientific journals in the field of biomechanics, biomaterials, physiology and medicine.
He is author of more than 280 scientific works, of which 117 on peer-reviewed international journals.
