PROFILE

Maria Laura Costantino took the Master degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1982 at Politecnico di Milano and in 1987 the Ph.D. in Bioengineering.

Currently she is full professor in Industrial Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano, where she holds the courses "Life Support Systems", and “Biomachines (with Laboratory)” both offered at the Master Programme in Biomedical Engineering.

She is the responsible of the of the Artificial Organs Laboratory, part of the Laboratory of Biological Structure Mechanics (LaBS) of the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering, for research, consulting and teaching activities.

From January 2013 to December 2018 she has served on as Coordinator of the Biomedical Engineering Programme Council at Politecnico di Milano, and member of the Council of the School of Industrial and Information Engineering at Politecnico di Milano.

From January 2019 she is being serving on as President of the new Master Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery MEDTEC School, jointly issue by Humanitas University and Politecnico di Milano.

Her research activity has always been dealing both with experimental and theoretical biomechanics focusing mass, momentum and energy transfer in artificial internal organs and in the biological system, cardiovascular fluid dynamics, design of biomedical devices interacting with blood (e.g. dialysis filters, blood oxygenators, blood pumps, heart valve prostheses, circuits for extracorporeal circulation), the study of the biological-system-to-artificial-organs interaction and patient specific modelling. She is author of many scientific papers published on peer reviewed international Journals.

She boasts research collaborations with Italian and Foreign Institution.

She participated to projects co-financed by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, and by private Foundations, either as leading researcher or as a partner.

She is responsible of many contracts signed with important Italian and foreign biomedical companies in terms of both research and third part activity.

She is co-holder of Italian and European Patents about novel medical devices and techniques.

Maria Laura Costantino has often been appointed as an expert in the field, by the Public Prosecutor or the Judge in judicial proceedings dealing with health related technological aspects.

She is a member of the European Society of Artificial Organs (ESAO), of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) and of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB).
