Milan, 11 December 2019 - The ceremony for the Award "Innovazione Amica dell’ambiente", promoted by Legambiente in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano, took place in the Aula Rogers.

The Award "Innovazione Amica dell’ambiente"is an annual recognition of Legambiente destined for all those product, process, service, technological, managerial and social innovations, which prove to contribute to significant reductions in environmental impacts, to considerable strengthening of resilience to effects of climate change and which stand out for originality, repeatability and development potential.

For the sector of the Circular economy special mention for Bi-rex, a project born in the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "Giulio Natta" under the supervision of Prof. Andrea Mele.

Bi-rex is an innovative and eco-sustainable treatment of differents biomass deriving from agri-food processing normally considered and managed as waste, in order to recover high added value products, such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, chitin, silica. The process is based on the use of an innovative class of low environmental impact solvents called Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES). The process is protected by two patents filed and two patents in the drafting phase.

The project was developed in the laboratory by Greta Colombo Dugoni (PhD student in Ingegneria Chimica e Chimica Industriale), and Monica Ferro (post doc).
In addition, Anna Bertani, management engineer, and Rosario Dispenza, process engineer, both Aumni Polimi, are part of the team.
